Multibillion-dollar flood damage has people throughout the Houston area checking the insurance policies on their homes and cars.

Auto claims are mounting at the state's leading insurer, State Farm, says spokesman Chris Pilcic:

"About 6,500 claims filed so far across the state related to heavy rain; those are just cars."

Standard homeowner policies don't cover flooding, which has to be bought from the federal government.  And repeated flooding-and-rebuilding might get you an ultimatum about any future coverage, says Mark Hanna of the Insurance Council of Texas.

"One, you're either self-insured:  Two, you're going to have to build your house up. Each time there's been three feet of water, four feet of water - what have you.   You're going to have to raise the level of your house, or not offer them a building permit."

He says FEMA is already in the red and can't afford to keep re-insuring those same properties.

The overall storm damage is estimated in the billions, with more still to be counted.
